An Intoduction to the Cause

For those of you that are not Cornish it may take you a while to grasp the concept of this campaign. But the long and short of it is that we are trying to save small local businesses and what is currently Falmouth Wharves from the developers. Who with great care, time and imagination have proposed to build 45 luxury apartments, a luxury hotel, a cafe/bar, a marina and 17 workshops. You may initially think that sounds like a nice idea? However as result of this development most of the businesses and self employed people working from the wharves will lose there tenancies and therefore go out of business. What about those 17 workshop spaces - I hear you cry. Well they will be to small and to few to house all, if any, of the businesses currently on the wharves. Not only this but once the wharves are developed there will be little or no scope for their use as a deep water landing site. This would be a terrible result, as these are the last deep water working wharves left in Falmouth, outside of the docks. So for all you boaties out there or people of Cornwall struggling to get by in the current property market please take note.We are going to buy the wharves. How - once again I hear you cry! With a community buy out. That's right we need money and lots of it. So if you know anybody that is willing to invest in scheme that aims to save local communities from the chop. We want to hear from you. Top hat big thumb!!!! The most important thing here is that these wharves remain under community control, for the community, from the community. Or if you would just like to help out? Maybe you have a skill to offer? Plumbers, financial advisers and tea makers are all welcome. Maybe you're a confectioner, we would like to have some sweets during our meetings. Big smile, well that's if our teeth don't fall out. Oh yup we really, really need a film maker - were working on a couple but we don't have any straight answers yet.So that's about it. I hope this has adequately inspired you for the day. Here's my top tip, if you are excited and you feel your mind racing and fingers itching, so much so that you're off to light a fag or even make a cup of tea to try and get a grip on your nerves (they're both stimulants by the way). Just compose yourself for a moment and write me an email. wharvescommunity@gmail.com and from there if you're not a computer person you can get my telephone number to call me.
Happy big thoughts
